North East Cultural Building

The North East Arts Council initially organized in 1989 to manage Picnic in the Park, a summer weekly entertainment event series held in North East’s central Gibson Park, and added artistic workshops, dramatic productions and gallery shows for both adults and children. In 1996 the Arts Council was in need of a permanent home and began raising funds to restore the original North East Town Hall, built in 1880. As a result, the North East Cultural Center was created to permanently house the North East Arts Council in the upper level and the North East Historical Society on the main floor and is also home to the North East Community Players theater group. The building is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has maintained a constant membership of 50-75 members since its founding.
